Eternal Life

Share

What is eternal life? I’ve been brooding over John 17, where Jesus prays for himself, the disciples and for all believers. In verse 3 Christ defines eternal life thusly:” that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” This verse stuck in my craw. I thought eternal life just meant not dying, and going to heaven where there is no pain – only pleasure. Needless to say, I think I’ve been missing something. Maybe it would be better to think of eternal life less in terms of time and mortality and more in terms of the greatest, most “alive” life possible. And that is defined as knowing Christ. My pattern is to search for the “alivest” life through self-fulfillment. And that means plumbing the depths of my own self and seeking for that which satisfies me. That never quite works out. Well, time to start plumbing the depths of the eternal God, and his son. Lord, let my eternal life start now.
